io-consultants is designing Etihad's new catering facility in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi - 19.11.2015
Etihad Airways is the national airline in the United Arab Emirates and among the fastest growing air carriers worldwide. Its home base and main hub Abu Dhabi International Airport is set to undergo a major expansion of Etihad’s present catering facilities.
io-consultants with a team of in flight catering experts is responsible for the catering system and equipment layout and design to ensure streamlined catering processes throughout the entire facility, spanning all the project phases from concept design to start of operation.
The new in-flight catering facility will produce around 90,000 meals per day, bringing the total capacity of the old and the new facilities to 172,000 meals per day. Food production of this magnitude can only be managed with automated in-house logistics systems. The goal is to implement state-of-the-art, reliable and easy-to-operate systems that will guarantee strict compliance with all the hygiene standards for meal pre-preparation and production, dishwashing, waste disposal, storage, transportation, etc. “Due to the complexity of the project, we needed a specialist experienced in the concept and design of airline catering plants”, says Paul Haines, General Manager of Etihad Airport Services Catering (EASC). EASC appointed io-consultants, an industrial planning and consulting company from Heidelberg, Germany and its subsidiary io-consultants in Dubai and a long-term partner in previous EASC projects.
Etihad Airways commenced operations in November 2003. Its subsidiary Etihad Airport Services provides in-flight catering, ground support and cargo services to Etihad and other airlines at Abu Dhabi Airport. The sub-unit Etihad Airport Services Catering operates as a service provider to Etihad Airways and other airlines, according to their requirements. Furthermore Etihad Airport Services Catering caters for the Etihad Airways airport lounges, staff restaurants, events, and the hotel and hospitality industries.
Project completion is scheduled for November 2019.
