io-consultants and WALA celebrate ground-breaking ceremony of new sales and logistics centre
Heidelberg - 19.2.2016
WALA Heilmittel GmbH, a foundation-owned company, is currently building a new, state-of-the-art sales and logistics centre on an industrial estate in Zell unter Aichelberg in south-west Germany. The growing market for natural cosmetics and medicines required an expansion of the buildings and factory installations, which had reached peak capacity. On Tuesday, 16 February 2016, the company celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony together with io-consultants, who planned the premises and the entire logistics.
On an area covering 35 hectares (350,000 sqm), the site will accommodate an automatic pallet warehouse with space for 12,000 pallets, automatic small parts storage facilities for small containers with around 13,000 load carriers, a technical building, and a logistics building with social spaces and areas for incoming goods, storage, picking and distribution. “Besides focussing on the modular expandability, a key aspect of the master plan was to create a staff-friendly workplace. The logistics building is connected by bridges to the technical building and the automatic warehouses, and natural light can flow in from all sides – which is example-setting in a logistics environment,” says Steffen Moll, project manager at io-consultants.
WALA Logistik exports WALA medicines and Dr. Hauschka cosmetic products, including the Dr. Hauschka Med brand, to more than 40 countries. A total of 2.3 million delivery items in 600,000 shipments – from single products to whole containers – leave the premises every year. In order to better serve future demand, WALA will consolidate the material flow from the different sites into one central location.
Company sales and the number of employees have both more than doubled over the past decade. “With an investment volume of around EUR 45 million, the construction of this ultra-modern sales and logistics centre represents a milestone in WALA’s history,” says Dr. Philip Lettmann, board member of WALA Heilmittel GmbH.
WALA is also making an environmentally sound investment. Designed with a focus on eco-friendliness – the building includes energy-saving lighting, its own heat recovery plant, and energy recovery in the technical logistics area – energy consumption is expected to lie around 30 per cent below the values specified in the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV 2014). Being only a short distance away from the corporate headquarters in Bad Boll, the new site is a further sign of WALA’s clear commitment to the region.
Shell construction work at the site is scheduled to be completed by December 2016. The new sales and logistics centre will be ready for occupation at the beginning of 2018.
