New distribution and logistics premises for WALA

WALA Heilmittel GmbH, manufacturer of WALA medicines and Dr. Hauschka cosmetic products, opened its state-of-the-art distribution and logistics centre in Zell unter Aichelberg (south-west Germany), on 23 June 2018. io-consultants acted as lead consultant for WALA, supervising all the involved trades for the buildings and outdoor installations, and planning the entire logistics from blueprint, approval and execution planning to implementation monitoring and commissioning.
The site spans 35,000 sqm and accommodates an automatic pallet warehouse with space for around 12,000 pallets, an automatic small parts storage facility for small containers with about 13,000 load carriers, and a technical and a logistics building. Incoming and outgoing goods, packaging, picking and shipping areas, offices, conference rooms, social rooms, and a cafeteria are all housed in the logistics building. “Besides focussing on the modular expandability, a key aspect of our plans was to create a staff-friendly workplace. The logistics building is connected by bridges to the technical building and the automatic warehouses. Natural light can flow in from all sides, which really sets an example for a logistics centre,” says Steffen Moll, project manager at io-consultants.
The site also reflects WALA’s pledge to the environment. All the construction work was carried out using green energy and, as a natural follow-on, the distribution and logistics centre will be operated with green energy as well. The building uses efficient LED lighting, has its own photovoltaic plant providing solar power, and a CHP plant for generating electricity and heat; the latter in combination with a CO2-neutral pellet heating system. The implemented logistics systems are equipped with energy recovery technology. The outdoor areas were designed according to biodiversity principles, with lawn areas interspersed with wildflower meadows, native shrubs and old varieties of fruit trees. The roof is landscaped.
