Henry Schein opens new logistics centre in Heppenheim
Heppenheim - 2.2.2016
On 29 January 2016, Henry Schein opened its state-of-the-art logistics centre in an industrial estate in Heppenheim, about 60 km south of Frankfurt. io-consultants developed the logistics concept, generated the tender documents, and coordinated the construction and logistics contractors during the realisation phase.
“A key challenge of this project was to further enhance the client’s already efficient logistics and picking processes,” says Dietmar Berger, partner at io-consultants.
The site spans 31,000 sqm, providing sufficient space for the 10.5 metre high warehouse that covers 18,000 sqm (the equivalent of three football fields). Since the ground-breaking ceremony on 11 September 2014, 440 HGVs have rolled in to pour the concrete foundations. 100 tons of steel fibres have been fitted and four kilometres of electric lines laid beneath the base plate. In all, 700 tons of steel have been installed and 60 kilometres of cables laid. io-consultants prepared the analysis of hazards and hazardous goods in accordance with the German Water Management Act, and the related fire extinguishing system concept. Several thousand sprinkler heads were installed inside the building: 2,300 on the ceiling, 4,600 in the storage aisles, and 121 in the offices.
The new warehouse can accommodate 70,000 different articles, which is significantly above the European average. 2.1 kilometres of conveyor belts were installed to transport the goods.
“We spent a long time looking for a suitable site in the vicinity, so that we could build a logistics centre modern enough to accommodate our huge product mix and to meet today’s complex work requirements. We operate another high-tech logistics centre in Gallin [northern Germany], and with these new facilities, we are now up to standard here, too,” comments Axel Pfitzenreiter, Vice President Global Supply Chain Europe.
The new logistics centre is a strategic hub for central Europe, and will supply goods to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Benelux. Around 100 staff work for Henry Schein in Heppenheim.
