BMW opens new warehouse for spare parts management

Heidelberg - 18.10.2016

BMW Group’s new parts depot in the Bavarian town of Wallersdorf was officially inaugurated on 11 October 2016. Consultants and planners from io-consultants, who are supporting the project with an interdisciplinary team of experts from logistics, architecture, and IT process planning for SAP EWM, took part in the ceremony.

“We have been collaborating with BMW since the early concept phase and are delighted to be part of this prestigious project. The parts depot will be an important cornerstone for efficient spare parts management,” says Thomas Kilimann, Managing Director at io-consultants.

A new warehouse and a distribution center are currently being built on an area spanning 200,000 sqm at the Wallersdorf site. The distribution center will be the central hub for intelligent spare parts logistics management; all incoming goods will be consolidated there before being dispatched to all other warehouses and two new logistics centers. “Soon, shipments can be pooled to optimise materials flows and improve delivery times and quality,” says Adrian Siegler, partner and project manager at io-consultants.

Starting from December, fast-moving and large-volume spare parts and accessories, i.e. high demand items, will be stored in the adjacent warehouse for delivery to the distribution centers. The Wallersdorf depot, another spare parts warehouse in Bruckberg-Gündlkofen and the central spare parts warehouse in Dingolfing together form the BMW Group's “Centralized Spare Parts Distribution Center”, known as the ZTA. io-consultants is contributing its 50+ years of experience in spare parts logistics to these and other projects – such as newbuilds of continental and regional distribution centers – to provide one-source, comprehensive planning services for operational distribution logistics.
